UNDIP, Semarang (4/6) – The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences of Universitas Diponegoro (FPIK UNDIP) has officially launched the Double Degree Postgraduate Program in Aquatic Resource Management in collaboration with Chiba University, Japan. The international program was inaugurated at the FPIK UNDIP Auditorium on Thursday, June 4, 2026, alongside the launch of a book entitled “Coastal and Marine Spatial Database Systems: Image Processing and Applications.” The book is a collaborative work by Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Hartoko, M.Sc., Professor of Oceanography and Marine Geomatics at FPIK UNDIP, and Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, Ph.D., Professor at the Health and Disease Omics Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiba University.
Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science at UNDIP, Prof. Agus Trianto, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation and warmly welcomed Prof. Josaphat, who has played a significant role in fostering collaboration between UNDIP and Chiba University. In his remarks, he emphasized that this partnership represents a strategic effort by FPIK UNDIP to expand international learning opportunities and academic networks for its academic community. According to Prof. Agus, the program not only offers valuable opportunities for students but also provides young lecturers with a strategic platform to enhance their academic and research capacities on a global scale.
“Students should take full advantage of this opportunity, including improving their English proficiency as preparation for an international academic environment. This program should serve as motivation for students to continue learning and enhancing their competencies at the global level,” he stated.
The initiative marks an important milestone in strengthening the internationalization of higher education at FPIK UNDIP. The double degree program is open to both Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) students, who will ultimately earn degrees from both FPIK UNDIP and the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Chiba University, Japan.
On the same occasion, the two institutions signed an Implementation Agreement covering the launch of the double-degree program, visiting-professor initiatives, joint research activities, and the book-launch program. A traditional tumpeng cutting followed the ceremony as a gesture of gratitude for the successful realization of the international collaboration.
Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, Ph.D., explained the implementation mechanism for the Master’s and Doctoral double-degree programs at Chiba University. To date, Chiba University has established 515 international student exchange agreements with institutions in 51 countries, supported by the Global Program ENGINE (Enhance Network for Global Innovative Education).
The event also served as the official launch of the collaborative book that resulted from several years of academic and research cooperation between Prof. Agus Hartoko and Prof. Josaphat. Prof. Agus explained that the publication underwent a rigorous review process lasting approximately one year before being published in English by CRC Press. The book is expected to become an important reference in the development of science and technology related to coastal and marine spatial database systems, image processing, and their various applications in aquatic resource management.
As a symbol of academic contribution to the institution, the book was formally presented to Universitas Diponegoro and received by Prof. Dr.Sc. Anindya Wirasatriya, S.T., M.Si., M.Sc., Secretary of the Oceanography Study Program, Department of Oceanography, FPIK UNDIP. Through the launch of this program, FPIK UNDIP reaffirms its commitment to expanding global partnerships, enhancing the quality of education and research, and producing highly qualified human resources who contribute to the advancement of fisheries and marine sciences at the international level.
