UNDIP Promotes AI Ethics: Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Academic World

UNDIP, Semarang (April 29) – Amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) demonstrates its commitment to upholding academic integrity by promoting the ethical and responsible use of AI. Through its 64th webinar series titled “AI Prompting for Academic Purposes to Support Scientific Publications,” UNDIP not only opens the door to digital literacy for its academic community but also invites all participants to reflect on AI’s role as a critical partner—rather than a replacement—in the scientific thinking process.

This initiative is part of UNDIP’s strategic effort to foster an academic culture that adapts to technological advances while remaining grounded in the values of honesty and scientific responsibility. The event was held online via Zoom on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, and was attended by 1,000 enthusiastic participants from various backgrounds who stayed engaged until the end of the Q&A session.

Dr. Dasapta Erwin Irawan, S.T., M.T., an academic and hydrogeology practitioner from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), delivered a presentation titled “AI with AI: Using Generative AI with Academic Integrity.”

The event was officially opened by Dr. Aris Puji Widodo, S.Si., M.T., Director of Information Systems and Technology at UNDIP, representing the Vice-Rector for Human Resources, Information Technology, Law, and Organization. In his opening remarks, Dr. Aris emphasized the importance of ethics in the use of AI, especially in supporting scientific publications.

“UNDIP fully supports the use of this technology to strengthen an innovative and adaptive academic culture,” he stated.

Dr. Aris also expressed his hope that the webinar would serve as a critical and reflective forum to discuss the role of AI in academia. He asserted that AI should be seen as a co-pilot in academic processes, with users remaining the primary decision-makers regarding the outputs generated by the technology.

In his presentation, Dr. Dasapta stressed that the use of AI must continue to uphold the principles of academic integrity. He reminded attendees that AI is not a substitute for critical decision-making but rather a tool to accelerate and simplify research and publication processes.

“AI can be an extraordinary tool, but its use must remain honest and responsible. We need to be clear about our purpose for using it,” he emphasized.

He also highlighted the boundaries of AI use, such as prohibitions against generating fake data or claiming AI-generated content as original human work without explanation.

Additionally, using AI during examinations is strictly forbidden as it violates the principle of academic honesty.

Furthermore, Dr. Dasapta introduced effective prompting techniques to produce AI outputs that are relevant, accurate, and ethical. According to him, the key to utilizing AI lies in how prompts are critically and contextually crafted.

“The use of AI prompting in academic contexts can support various stages of research, from topic exploration to drafting scientific manuscripts,” he explained.

The webinar is expected to equip participants with a deeper understanding of how to use AI wisely and with integrity in academia. It is also part of UNDIP’s broader effort to enhance both the quality and quantity of scientific publications at national and international levels. (DHW & Sania; ed. NH)
