UNDIP Professor Talk: National Sovereignty Through Education and Research Based on Local Wisdom

UNDIP, Semarang (July 24, 2025) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), through Commission A of the Board of Professors, held a webinar titled “From Campus for the Archipelago: National Sovereignty Through Education and Research Based on Local Wisdom” on Wednesday, July 24, 2025. The event featured experts from UNDIP and Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) to discuss the role of higher education in strengthening national sovereignty through local wisdom-based approaches.

Chairman of the Board of Professors Prof. Dr. Ir. Purwanto, DEA, opened the discussion by highlighting the day’s focus topics: economy, environment, and health, each presented by different speakers. Chair of Commission A of the Board of Professors Prof. Dr. Delianis Pringgenies, M.Sc., said in her remarks that the webinar served as a forum for joint discussion and reflection, particularly between UNDIP and UNAIR, to address national challenges through local research.

Moderated by Prof. Dr. Hermin Pancasakti Kusumaningrum, S.Si., M.Si., the webinar featured three speakers: Prof. Faisal, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D. (Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business UNDIP); Prof. Dr. Agoes Soegianto, Ir., DEA. (Professor and Lecturer in Environmental Engineering, UNAIR); and Prof. Dr. dr. Tri Indah Winarni, M.Si.Med., PA. (Professor and member of UNDIP’s Board of Professors).

In the first session, Prof. Faisal discussed how risk governance can help universities manage risks and improve governance despite cultural and human resource challenges. He outlined the opportunities and challenges of implementing good governance in higher education institutions.

By fostering a risk-aware culture and implementing systematic risk management, universities are expected to accelerate their progress toward achieving their goals and deliver a greater positive impact on society. Risk governance, he emphasized, is essential to developing a culture of risk awareness and achieving effective university management.

The second session featured Prof. Agoes Soegianto, who discussed the application of appropriate technologies from university research to manage and preserve the environment, incorporating local values. He offered local wisdom-based solutions to address ecological and energy crises. As centers of knowledge, universities hold a strategic position in promoting conservation through multiple channels.

Environmental education and literacy are key foundations, he said, by integrating environmental issues into curricula and organizing green campaigns. Natural resource conservation requires synergy among universities in education, research, community service, and policy-making for government and industry, with students serving as the driving force for the future of the environment.

The final presentation was delivered by Prof. Tri Indah Winarni, who focused on health, particularly innovations in autism management based on local contexts. In her presentation, “Breakthroughs in Autism Research: From Genetics to Intervention Innovations,” she emphasized the importance of early autism detection to prevent the worsening of symptoms.

In autism treatment, the UBM-ERC has innovated by developing a patented therapeutic weighted vest with vibration stimulation. This breakthrough offers an innovative solution to improve the quality of life for individuals with autism.

The webinar continued with an interactive discussion session moderated by Prof. Hermin and concluded with a group photo and closing remarks by Prof. Delianis. “This spirit aligns with our shared vision of making campuses agents of social change that bridge global knowledge with local needs and wisdom,” Prof. Delianis said.

Higher education and research, she emphasized, are not only about technology or numbers but also about values, culture, and commitment to society. (UNDIP/ Public Communication/ Rona)
