Hundreds of Elementary School Students Join Educational Tour at UNDIP Waste Processing Facility: Learning About Recycling and Environmental Care

UNDIP, Semarang (November 24, 2025) – The Integrated Waste Processing Facility (Tempat Pengolahan Sampah Terpadu / TPST) of Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) welcomed an educational visit from SD Islam Pangeran Diponegoro on Monday, November 24, 2025. Hundreds of students filled the TPST area at the UNDIP’s Occupational Health and Safety and Environment Office to participate in a field learning activity themed “Environmental Love and School Cleanliness.” The program aimed to provide hands-on learning experiences on waste management, environmental cleanliness, and the application of the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

A total of 373 students attended the visit, including 144 fourth graders, 117 fifth graders, and 112 sixth graders. During the activity, students were guided through UNDIP’s waste processing facility to observe proper waste management, accompanied by teachers, the K3L UPT team, and UNDIP student volunteers.

During the socialization and educational tour, students were introduced to basic concepts of waste and the environment. They were also taken around several integrated waste management facilities at TPST UNDIP, including Kedu Farm (the chicken coop area), the Maggot House, where maggots process food waste, the Organic Waste Processing Area, and various pieces of equipment used by TPST UNDIP for waste processing.

Dr.Ling. Ir. Sri Sumiyati, S.T., M.Si., IPM., ASEAN Eng., representing the Head of UNDIP’s Occupational Health and Safety and Environment Office, Dr. Bina Kurniawan, S.K.M., M.Kes., encouraged students to view the visit not only as learning but also as an act of worship.

“Seeking knowledge is an act of worship. With the intention of learning at UNDIP’s Integrated Waste Processing Facility and Occupational Health and Safety and Environment Office, may Allah bless our efforts to care for the universe. May this knowledge be beneficial for all of us,” she said.

The Principal of SD Islam Pangeran Diponegoro, Ust. Khoiril Basyar, S.HI., S.Pd., expressed his gratitude for the learning opportunity provided by UNDIP and reminded students to apply what they learned.

“Don’t just participate—make sure to practice it in your daily life, at home and at school. No littering, keep the environment clean, and we must be able to manage the waste we produce,” he stated.

Several students also shared their excitement after joining the educational tour. They were happy to gain new insights into waste and the environment and to observe the waste-processing stages directly.

“Here I saw a chicken coop, and also how to sort waste. From start to finish, it was really fun to watch. I think this place is great for anyone who doesn’t know how to process waste,” said Azka, a fourth-grade student, when asked about his impression of the activity.

This environmental education program is not limited to elementary students. On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, TPST UNDIP will also welcome a similar visit from PAUD Permata UNDIP for an Outing Class themed “Clean Environment.”

These educational visits demonstrate UNDIP’s commitment to promoting environmental education and awareness among the community, especially the younger generation. They also reinforce UNDIP’s role as a campus dedicated to ecological sustainability. TPST UNDIP continues to open its doors as a friendly, informative, and inspiring public learning space to cultivate environmental awareness from an early age. (Public Communication/UNDIP/Nabila)
