FISIP UNDIP Holds Communication Book Review

The Department of Communication Science at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro, held a Book Review event featuring works by Dr. Sunarto, M.Si., and Dr. Turnomo Rahardjo, M.Si., both of whom are lecturers in Communication Science at UNDIP. The event took place in the FISIP UNDIP Auditorium on Wednesday (30/10).

“The role of lecturers is to conduct research, and its output is publication. The writing culture developed within the Department of Communication Science is hoped to become practical knowledge and scientific charity,” said Ika Riswanti Putranti, Ph.D., Deputy Dean for Resources at FISIP UNDIP.

Dr. Nurul Hasfi, S.Sos., M.A., Head of the Department of Communication Science, mentioned that the book review event would foster more discussions and research to help understand and implement the principles of communication research and comprehend new phenomena in the digital era, along with the solutions offered for problems arising from technological developments.

In his remarks, Dr. Sunarto stated that his book, titled “Communication in the Digital Era: Challenges and Opportunities in Facing Social Disruption,” discusses how communication technology creates disruption in various aspects of life, including communication. Conventional media are compelled to adapt through convergence to remain relevant, while new media bring significant political, economic, and legal impacts.

“There are challenges and opportunities that conventional media can take advantage of with these new technologies. Adaptation through the convergence of various new media platforms is a strategy for conventional media to survive and thrive in today’s digital era,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Dr. Turnomo said that his book, titled “Understanding Communication Research Methods,” covers various communication research methods, including quantitative (surveys, experiments, content analysis), qualitative (semiotics, framing, case studies, rhetoric), and mixed methods (reception analysis, communication networks, critical discourse). The book also highlights the ethics of social research, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations in research.

“Reception analysis is a research approach that combines two research focuses: text and audience interpretation. Communication network analysis is a research procedure using systems theory logic, analyzing the communication process as an interconnected system. Critical discourse analysis views language as social practice and considers the context of language use as crucial,” Dr.Turnomo stated. (LW-Public Relations)
