UNDIP, Semarang (April 23) – In an effort to enhance the quality of learning and the development of curriculum-based teaching materials, the Library and UNDIP Press at Universitas Diponegoro once again held the 3rd Batch of the Book Writing Workshop, focusing on the creation of textbooks. This initiative is part of a strategic effort to increase academic productivity among faculty members through high-quality scholarly publications.
The workshop took place on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the 4th Floor Meeting Room of the Library and UNDIP Press Building, Tembalang Campus, featuring a certified speaker from the National Agency for Professional Certification (BNSP); Prof. Dr. Ir. Munasik, M.Sc.; a Senior Instructor (Level V Qualification); and Professor at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science UNDIP.
A total of 62 participants attended, including 52 lecturers from various faculties and schools at UNDIP and 10 invited authors who have published ISBN-registered books. The event also included a symbolic handover to these 10 authors as a token of appreciation for their collaboration and dedication.
The workshop was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal Affairs, and Organization, Prof. Dr. Adian Fatchur Rochim, S.T., M.T., who expressed his appreciation for the consistent implementation of scientific literacy programs by the Library and UNDIP Press. He encouraged faculty members to consider teaching books as an important part of their academic portfolio and as a contribution to strengthening the scientific culture within the university.
During the event, updates were shared on UNDIP’s book writing program achievements. From Batch 1 and 2, a total of 98 manuscripts were submitted, with 31 assigned ISBNs and 10 printed. For Batch 3, 52 manuscripts have been received, with 24 in the layout stage and 28 undergoing content enrichment.
“We hope this initiative increases the output of teaching books at UNDIP, which previously fell under LP2MP and is now a collaborative effort between the Library and UNDIP Press. This collaboration aims to inspire and benefit, especially early-career lecturers, who contribute to academic performance credits and the growth of course offerings,” said Prof. Adian.
The opening session was delivered by Suwondo, S.Hum., M.Kom., Head of the Library and UNDIP Press, who presented on the topic “Procedures and Guidelines for Publishing ISBN-Registered Books.” He emphasized his office’s commitment to being a strategic partner for lecturers, supporting them from manuscript development through to publication.
Suwondo provided a technical guide to the publishing process, including manuscript submission, review, design, ISBN registration, and publication via UNDIP Press. He also discussed key aspects of book writing, such as writing motivation, book structure, academic writing principles, and the use of AI in textbook development.
Meanwhile, Prof. Munasik delivered a comprehensive presentation titled “Writing a Textbook,” outlining the structure of curriculum-based textbooks using the Semester Learning Plan, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and the importance of including exercises, answer keys, and knowledge maps. He also offered practical guidance for drafting effective textbook outlines.
He distinguished teaching books from other academic types, such as monographs, handouts, modules, and book chapters, in terms of presentation style, substance, and target readers. “Textbooks are primarily intended for internal course students but can also be used by the wider academic community,” he explained.
According to him, teaching books should not merely deliver content—they must be communicative, structured, and aligned with the curriculum. He encouraged lecturers to start from their course plan and develop content into 14 chapters, including descriptions, learning outcomes, assessments, and academic references.
Prof. Munasik also emphasized the importance of using reputable journal references and managing citations with tools like Mendeley.
The workshop was interactive, featuring discussions, Q&A sessions, and practical exercises on developing textbook outlines. The UNDIP Press team also offered publishing consultation services to participants.
Through this collaborative spirit, the 3rd Book Writing Workshop is expected to be a platform for enhancing lecturers’ capacity to write and publish quality teaching books, thereby strengthening academic literacy and promoting publication productivity at Universitas Diponegoro. (DHW)
