UNDIP and Beijing University Establish Double Degree Program in Chemical Engineering

UNDIP, Semarang (7/4) – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) has officially established an international academic collaboration with the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT), China, through the signing of an Agreement on a Double Degree Program, conducted in a hybrid format via Zoom Meeting on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

This initiative marks a strategic step toward expanding UNDIP’s global network, particularly by strengthening chemical engineering education in line with international standards. The program follows a 2+2 scheme, in which students complete the first two years at UNDIP and continue the next two years at BUCT under an integrated curriculum agreed upon by both institutions.

BUCT is widely recognized as a leading university in chemical engineering and research-based innovation in China. This synergy with UNDIP is expected to foster productive collaboration not only in education but also in research and technology transfer.

In his remarks, the Rector of UNDIP, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., emphasized that this partnership is a strategic move to strengthen UNDIP’s position as a world-class university. “To become a world-class university, global partnerships are key to improving academic quality while expanding international contributions,” he stated.

Prof. Suharnomo further noted that the agreement goes beyond student mobility, serving as a platform for broader transformation—opening opportunities for joint research, faculty exchange, and technology transfer with tangible global impact.

“Through this double degree program, students will gain cross-country academic experiences that enrich global perspectives, enhance competitiveness, strengthen cultural understanding, and develop adaptive competencies,” he added.

The Rector also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in realizing the collaboration and hoped that it would continue to grow sustainably and productively, delivering meaningful contributions to both Indonesia and China.

Similarly, BUCT Vice President Prof. Wang Feng welcomed the partnership and expressed appreciation for the strategic collaboration, which is the result of a long-standing engagement following UNDIP’s delegation visit to BUCT the previous year.

“The signing of this double degree program marks an important milestone in deepening inter-university collaboration. Beyond an academic agreement, it represents a shared commitment to producing outstanding chemical engineering talents with a global perspective,” Prof. Wang Feng stated.

Prof. Wang Feng explained that the program not only aligns curricula and learning systems but also strengthens educational ties between Indonesia and China. In the future, BUCT hopes to expand cooperation in research, faculty exchange, and the integration of academia with industry.

The agreement was signed by university leaders and faculty representatives, followed by a group photo session and discussions on future program development. Through this collaboration, both institutions agreed to mutual recognition of academic credits and to award bachelor’s degrees from both universities to students who complete the program.

Leadership teams and delegations from both institutions attended the event. The UNDIP delegation was led by the Rector, accompanied by the Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, Collaboration, and Public Communication, Wijayanto, S.IP., M.Si., Ph.D.; the Director of Reputation, Partnership, and Global Connectivity, Prof. Dr. Ir. Hadiyanto, S.T., M.Sc., IPU; the Deputy Director for Partnership and Global Connectivity, Pulung Widhi Hari Hananto, S.H., LL.M.; the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Jamari, S.T., M.T.; and the Head of the Chemical Engineering Study Program, Prof. Ir. Didi Dwi Anggoro, M.Eng., Ph.D., along with their team.

From BUCT, attendees included Prof. Wang Feng (Vice President), Prof. Zhang Bing (Chair of the School of International Education), Prof. Li Qifang (Associate Vice Dean of the School of International Education), Prof. Yu Yue (Vice Dean of the College of Chemical Engineering), Prof. Sun Baochang, and other international program representatives.

This collaboration between UNDIP and BUCT is expected to strengthen sustainable and productive contributions while reaffirming the role of higher education institutions as bridges across nations in producing highly qualified chemical engineering professionals who are adaptive to global challenges, in line with the spirit of “Noble and Valuable UNDIP.” (Public Communication/UNDIP/DHW)
